SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic School, Greenpoint

100 to 102 Dupont Street
In another neighborhood I might not have noticed this building but sitting empty on the quiet block of Dupont Street among residential buildings at the far end of Greenpoint, it stands out. I have not been able to find out much about this building; however, according to the Department of Buildings it is a Yeshiva (Jewish parochial school) and it has been under renovation for some time. Constructed in the year 1919, I believe this building is designed in the Romanesque Revival style. Given the character of the architecture and the crosses detailed in the building's masonry I suspected that it was not a Jewish School. I spoke to a long time resident of the neighborhood and learned that it was a Catholic School (School of S S Cyril and Methodius) that began to undergo renovation 3 years ago. The school closed in 1999. When I first moved to Greenpoint this building was in a state of disrepair and now it is a condo building with apartments starting at $2,450 per month.

Entrance Details
Pictured here are the doorway arch with broken pediment, faux finish and cross relief, as well as the twin columns with cushion capitals. Prior to being renovated the pediment and arch over the entrance were covered with green tiles instead of the faux finish it has now.

Looking Skyward to the Parapet Wall

A cross once stood at the peak of the parapet wall. In addition to the cross, other religious ornament has also been removed.

    1. Thanks for the information. I spoke to someone who lives a few doors down and he said that the school closed three years ago. He must have been referring to when the new owners began renovating the building.

    2. Hello King Ning. I'll bet we know each other. I also went to Ss. Cyril & Methodius from '65 to '74. I lived right behind the playground, at 134 Eagle St., it's gone now, just a vacant lot. And later at 216 Freeman St., also gone. I would like very much to talk to anyone who went there. Did you go on the 8th grade trip to D.C.? I may have pictures from that trip, First Communion & Confirmation I'm about to go look.

  2. My grandmother and her older siblings attended this school starting in 1922. We missed taking her to see it on her 88th birthday, she couldn't remember where it was.

I attended this school from January 1960 through June 1968. I would have loved to walk through it as it was as a school. Spent 8-1/2 years there. Too many memories to count.

  7. I attended the school, K-12, 1946 to 1955. Great education by Polish nuns, the Sisters of Nazareth. Many wonderful memories. But also the not so good memory of the duck and cover drills under our desks, preparing for a nuclear attack.

  10. I attended this school from 1993 - 1995. We had about 30 kids in my 7th and 8th class. All of them Polish except two. We had an ESL bus come to the school where we would go and learn English. I have fond memories of this school. Sister Jeanette was the principal and boy she was tough. No one messed around with that nun. Very stern and strict. The kind kids need now in schools.

I went from 1954 to 1962. Have lived in Arizona for the last 50 years. Would love to see the condos that they made out of our school. Nuns strict but one in particular brutal. Not a good memory though most are.

  14. I remember Sr. Jean and all of the faculty at Sts. Cyril and Methodius fondly. I worked for the Bureau of Nonpublic Schools as a Corrective Reading Teacher during the 1990s and remember the amazing students who came to the MIU (mobile instruction unit) that was parked on the corner for Title I Reading, Math, ESL, and Guidance services.

  20. I remember Sister Baltazar. Went there in the late 70's. She was not very nice. There was a sweet Nun sister Agnes who was kind. She realized Sister Agnes was giving me a hard time and ran interference from time to time.
